There are many viruses which can live in the canine GI tract; some of them, like PARVOVIRUS, can cause severe illness, while others, like CORONAVIRUS, do not usually cause any problems.
In recent months, a virus known as CIRCOVIRUS that is usually found in pigs or birds has been reported as possibly being involved in some outbreaks of vomiting and diarrhea illnesses in canines in Ohio and Michigan. The Ohio outbreak has been proven NOT to be Circovirus, and there is no conclusive evidence that the Michigan outbreak is connected with Circovirus, but veterinarians and researchers are continuing to monitor the situation.
There is no reason to be alarmed….IF circovirus is now a cause for vomiting and diarrhea, we will still treat the illness the same way; with aggressive fluid therapy and supportive care. As with any cause for vomiting or diarrhea, the very young and the very old pets are always at greater risk of dehydration, etc. and would be treated more aggressively.
The veterinarians at Catawba Animal Clinic are aware of the research being done and are always on the lookout for any evidence of new health issues.
