Halloween will be here before we know it and the pets of York County will need your help to stay safe through the holiday. This time of year can be stressful for our pets with different schedules and new people coming to the house.
Our 5 easy tips can help you make the celebration easier for your fluffy family members.
1. No Tricks or Treats
Save the candy for the kids. Chocolate (especially dark or baker’s) can be toxic to animals. The artificial sweetener Xylitol found in many “sugar free” treats and gums can also be harmful to our pets.
2. Limit the Trick-or-treating
Consider keeping your pets in a separate room during the hours that you will see trick-or-treaters. Your pets may find all of the strangers in costume stressful and they could also take the opportunity to dart out the open door and become lost.
Be sure that your pet is wearing their collar with current identification and contact information attached. This will help reunite you if your pet does become lost.
4. Careful with Candles and Fire
Jack-o-lanterns and candles can burn an inquisitive pet and they are also a risk to start a fire if they are knocked over. Be sure to keep them out of reach if they are where pets could come in contact with them.
5. Comfortable Costumes
If your pet will be celebrating in costume be sure that there are no loose pieces that could be chewed off and swallowed and that the costume does not restrict your pet’s hearing, sight, breathing, or movement. Also try to take a few days ahead of time to get your pet accustomed to wearing the costume.
